Background: The IL6 gene in humans encodes the protein Interleukin-6 (IL-6), which functions as both a pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine. It is produced by T cells and macrophages to prompt the immune response, particularly in cases of trauma like burns or tissue damage leading to inflammation. IL-6 plays a crucial role in inducing fever and the acute phase response. Moreover, it is vital for the growth of hybridomas and is commonly included in cloning media like briclone. Bowcock et al. (1988) positioned the IL6 gene on chromosome 7p21. Through techniques such as in situ hybridization and Southern blot analysis of mouse-human hybrid cell lines, Sutherland et al. (1988) further pinpointed the IL-6 gene to chromosome 7p15.
