Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), also known as FGF2, is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family. This factor is highly specific as a chemotactic and mitogenic agent for various cell types and plays a key role in tissue remodeling, including ulcer healing, vascular repair, and recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI). bFGF is essential in the culture medium for human embryonic stem cells. Additionally, as a heparin-binding cationic protein, bFGF is involved in numerous pathological conditions, such as angiogenesis and the growth of solid tumors. Consequently, bFGF is considered a significant target for cancer chemopreventive and therapeutic strategies. |
