Background: | CCL22 is a protein encoded by the CCL22 gene, prominently expressed in macrophages, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and the thymus. It is also present in the thymus, lymph nodes, and appendix. CCL22 binds to the CCR4 receptor and acts as a chemoattractant for monocytes, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and natural killer cells, but not for neutrophils, eosinophils, or resting T-lymphocytes. Once secreted from monocyte-derived dendritic cells, CCL22 can be proteolytically cleaved into three forms: MDC (3-69), MDC (5-69), and MDC (7-69). |
