Bone-related lesions refer to abnormal growths or areas of damage in bone tissue. These lesions can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can appear anywhere in the body and vary widely in their severity and symptoms. The jaws combine several unique properties that mainly result from their distinct embryonic development and their role in providing anchorage for the teeth and their supporting structures. As a consequence, several bone-related lesions almost exclusively develop in the jaws. Bone related lesions in the jaw refer to irregularities or abnormalities present in the jawbone. These can include both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) growths.
Fibro osseous lesions (FOLs) are a generic designation of poorly defined group of lesions which are recognized to affect the jaws. There are 3 recognized FOLs, including: fibrous dysplasia (FD), cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), and cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). Because of their histologic similarity, they must be distinguished by clinical and radiologic criteria.
